The first of April is upon us, which generally indicates that you should watch your back against playful children, friends, family, and co-workers. It also means that you should take with a grain of salt any panicked calls or messages, or any news that seems too good to be true. For example, you probably didn’t win the Publisher’s Clearing House prize on April 1st, especially since you no longer subscribe to physical magazines.
If you have recently separated or divorced, then you understand the darkness and sadness that accompany these traumatic events. But now more than ever, humor should be a regular part of your life and we urge you to completely embrace April Fools Day.
Laughter is Healthy For You
We say this because laughter is literally healthy. The Mayo Clinic has written that laughter has actual physical health benefits. For example, laughter results in an increased intake of oxygen, increased heart rate, and brain stimulation. In addition, it may have a positive effect on your blood pressure and mental health.
April Fools Ideas
With your health and well being in mind, ponder the following April Fools ideas:
- Surprise everyone and be the first to strike. Pull off a prank (or complex series of pranks) of your own. Nothing harmful or malicious, but make plan and follow through with it. The more elaborate your prank, the better. Target your kids, your friends, and your co-workers, none of whom will be expecting it.
- If someone manages to get by your defenses, complement their efforts. Embrace that you have been targeted. Then counter-strike.
- Surround yourself with people who make you smile and laugh. As laughter is healthy, it logically follows that it is healthy to be around people who make you laugh.
- Re-discover your own sense of humor. Go to a comedy improv show or local comedy club. If there are stand up comics or shows that you like, treat yourself to a marathon on Netflix. If you have a dark sense of humor, you have reason and permission to embrace dark humor.
